Mangalore, the ancient town of ‘Mangalapura’, is the main port city of Karnataka, and also one of the major ports in India. It is now India’s ninth largest cargo handling port. Tucked amidst the backwaters formed by the Netravati and Gurupura rivers, it is known for its beaches, temples, churches and industries.
Mangalore is also known as the cradle of banking with nine major banks originating from here. Currently four major banks have their head offices here. It is a medical hub and has the best professional colleges and educational institutions.
Mangalore is a well connected city with an excellent road network and public transport system. There are day trips from Mangalore to Udupi, Dharmasthala and Subramanya.
The Mangalore international airport at Bajpe – 20 kilometres from the city - is well connected by air with Bangalore and other main cities in India. The recently opened Mangalore–Bangalore rail link has made this historic port city even more accessible.
